With its roots in general contracting and construction management services, Kitchell was selected to provide program management services for three design/build buildings for Solano Community College in Fairfield, Calif. In 2012, Solano Community College embarked on a $348 million multi-year construction program to support the construction of new buildings, renovation of existing buildings, infrastructure improvements, site acquisition and equipment purchases and selected Kitchell CEM to manage the program.

Three of the recent projects are being delivered by the design/build process. The first two – the Biotechnology and Science Building at the Vacaville Center in Vacaville, Calif., and the Automotive Technology building at the Vallejo Center in Vallejo, Calif. – were completed summer 2017 for fall occupancy. Solano Community College’s main campus is in Fairfield and where the third design/build project, the Science Building, is now under construction.

Even for long-standing universities known for their excellent liberal arts programs, there is no getting around the fact that STEM education is extremely important. Like other schools, Amherst College has seen its math and science curriculums grow tremendously in recent years. To meet this demand, Amherst enlisted Barr & Barr, a longtime partner with the university, to build its New Science Center. 

In July 2018, the school will open the four-story, 250,000-square-foot New Science Center with state-of-the-art teaching and research facilities. The center will include a science commons that will unite the five wings of the building. Barr and Barr info box 3

It will also include classrooms, teaching labs, a library, café and informal learning areas for students. In addition to the new building, improvements will be made to the infrastructure that serves the building as well as the Greenway Dorms. These upgrades include steam, chilled water, stormwater, sanitary sewer, electric and tele-data utilities.

In 1906, Pierre du Pont, a 36-year-old entrepreneur and philanthropist, purchased a former arboretum in southeast Pennsylvania to save the trees from a lumber mill. In the years that followed, du Pont used the grounds to satisfy his love of gardening and by the 1920s it had blossomed into a full public conservatory call Longwood Gardens.

Perini Management Services Inc. (PMSI) stands as a leader when it comes to working on U.S. landmarks. “Over the last six years, we’ve shown that we’re very capable in performing historic restoration projects throughout the country.  These projects include earthquake repairs to the Washington Monument, replacement of power and mechanical systems at Ellis Island, and power and lighting replacement at Carlsbad Caverns, to name a few,” Senior Vice President of Operations Brian Labbe says.

The company also has demonstrated that it can work on these sites while they remain open to visitors. ”We’ve performed multiple projects in accordance with the contract documents, while continuing full access to the public,” he says.

PMSI is bringing this capability to $15 million worth of work at Alcatraz Island in San Francisco. The company is restoring the exterior concrete walls of the famous prison, which was built in the early 1900s.
